Wilson's Creek Battlefield Marks 163rd Anniversary of Historic Civil War Battle
Wilson's Creek National Battlefield commemorated the 163rd anniversary of the first major Civil War engagement west of the Mississippi River.
Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, located just south of Republic along State Highway ZZ, marked the 163rd anniversary of the Battle of Wilson's Creek — a pivotal engagement that took place on August 10, 1861.
The battle was the first major Civil War conflict fought west of the Mississippi River and resulted in a Confederate victory. Union General Nathaniel Lyon was killed during the engagement, becoming the first Union general to die in action during the war.
The National Park Service site hosted commemorative programming including artillery demonstrations, living history presentations on Civil War medicine, and guided tours of the Ray House — a historic farmstead that served as a field hospital during the battle.
The battlefield's 5-mile tour road winds through preserved terrain that closely resembles its 1861 appearance, offering visitors a rare opportunity to walk the ground where history was made.
Wilson's Creek National Battlefield is open year-round and serves as one of the region's premier heritage tourism destinations, drawing visitors from across the country to Republic and the greater Springfield area.
